This Purition Review takes a look at one of the most interesting meal replacement shakes on the market. But if you would like to see some better options, check out our Top 5 Meal Replacement Shakes list here

Purition is a meal replacement shake from the United Kingdom. It is low in calories but is high in protein and also quite high in fibre. Theoretically, this makes Purition a good choice for weight loss, but it isn’t quite as simple as that.

This article will take a look at what Purition shakes are like, what their ingredients list contains, and ultimately whether Purition is a good meal replacement shake company or not. We will also take a look at the competition to see if there are any good alternatives to Purition.

Purition Meal Replacement Shakes

Pros

  • Excellent ingredients
  • High in protein
  • Lots of variety
  • Vegan and non-vegan options
  • Gluten-free
  • Available in multiple stores and online
  • Minimally processed

Cons

  • Only 200 calories per serving
  • Cost per serving high considering lack of calories
  • Some of the flavours are deeply unpopular
  • Very low carb
  • Due to minimal processing the shake can be a little gritty

There is a lot to like about Purition meal replacement shakes. They are high in protein, they offer both vegan and non-vegan options, there is a huge variety of flavours, and they are easy to find (at least in the United Kingdom).

Customers Love it

There are a lot of people who love Purition, and it is easy to see why. They are low sugar, are an excellent protein source, and they prioritise natural ingredients and real food.

Customers talk about how they absolutely love the different flavours, and that there is a massive difference between Purition and some of the bigger names such as Soylent when it comes to taste.

Cost per Serving is Very High

But there are some downsides, Purition shakes are only 200 calories per serving, this is not enough to properly replace a meal. Most meal replacement shakes are around 400 calories.

Let’s say you decided to replace all your meals with shakes (not necessarily a good idea, but it helps us illustrate a point). It would take 4x regular shakes (Huel, Rootana, IK Complete) to get 1,600 calories. While it would take 8x Purition shakes to get the same number of calories.

That’s double the serving, and when you consider the fact that Purition is already more expensive than many (£2 per serving compared to £1.68 for Huel).

This means it would cost £16 for 1,600 calories of Purition compared to £6.72 for 1,600 calories of Huel.

This is something we’ve seen before with Ka’Chava, a high-quality meal replacement that is a little too low in calories and the price per serving is quite high. Purition is better value for money than Ka’Chava, but not by much.

Ingredients in Purition

There are a lot of ingredients contained within Purition, and some ingredients are found in certain shakes but not others. As such, we’ve decided to split the ingredients into categories, in the same way as Purition.

Whole Foods Blend

British chia seeds, Greek pumpkin seeds, European sunflower kernels, Sri Lankan coconut, Californian almonds, British Golden linseed, Guatamalan sesame seeds, South African macadamia nuts, Californian pistachio nuts, European hazelnuts, American pecan nuts, American walnuts.

This is a really cool blend of whole foods, and this is where a lot of the healthy fats and plant-based protein must come from. It would be nice to know what quantities of each ingredient is present in Purition, but in all likelihood the dosage is very low.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it would be interesting to see whether the price would go down if they used a smaller variety of ingredients.

What’s really cool about this blend is the fact that Purition does not turn these whole foods into a powder. Instead they chop, crush, or leave intact. The idea being that the lack of processing leaves more nutrients in each ingredient.

This can lead to a less smooth finish to each shake, but if you are really into whole foods then this is a small sacrifice.

Fibre Blend

Psyllium husk, apple pectin, nutritional yeast

As Purition is trying to target the ketogenic crowd, they have tried to make a very low carb formula. However, they want the benefits of fibre, so have added three high-fibre ingredients.

Psyllium husk is often used as a natural laxative, but don’t worry it won’t have you rushing to the toilet immediately! It helps to add bulk to your stools.

Apple pectin is often used in jams and preserves, but it also has many health benefits. It has been linked to lowering cholesterol [1], it can improve gut health [2], and it may increase satiety [3].

These benefits can also be attributed to any form of fibre. The final ingredient in the fibre blend is nutritional yeast. This is an inactive version of bakers/brewer’s yeast, and it is very popular in vegan diets. It works in the same way as pectin and psyllium.

Protein Blend

British Grass Fed Whey Protein Isolate, or, British Hemp Seed Protein, Organic European Sunflower Protein, Premium European Golden Pea Protein, Organic European Pumpkin Protein

The protein powder used in Purition depends on whether you go for the Original version or the vegan version. The vegan version uses a blend of different plant-based protein sources (hemp protein blend, sunflower protein, pea protein, and pumpkin protein).

We assume that the majority of the plant-based protein comes from hemp protein concentrate and pea as they are the best sources. The Original Purition gets all of its protein from whey protein isolate, which is a decent protein source.

Botanicals

Cocoa, Madagascan Vanilla pods, Coffee Beans, Ceylon Cinnamon, Cardamom, Nutmeg, Curcumin Extract, Ground Ginger, Black Pepper, Cloves

The botanicals are added to make Purition taste great, and which botanical you get will be based on which shake you have chosen. For example, cocoa is only found in shakes that have chocolate in them, while vanilla pods are used in shakes that contain vanilla.

Freeze-Dried

European Strawberry, South American Banana, EU Blackcurrants, European Raspberry, Polish Beetroot, Japanese Matcha, Spanish Orange, Sour Cherries

As with the botanicals, Purition has freeze-dried ingredients to add a great taste as well as helping you to achieve your healthy eating goals. They help to add sweetness or tartness without having to use added sugar or artificial flavourings.

Sweetness

Stevia Leaf Extract, Coconut Blossom Sugar

Purition claims to be free from artificial sweeteners, though some would describe stevia as an artificial sweetener due to the nature of its production.

Some people enjoy the taste of stevia, while others complain of a stevia aftertaste that can be quite bitter.

Coconut blossom sugar is used in the latte shakes, and is a good alternative to stevia, and an even better alternative to most sweeteners.

Purition Flavour Options

There are 17 Purition flavours available to try. This is an incredible number to choose from. Huel, which is often seen as the company with the most variety, only offers 11 flavours.

Vegan Purition shakes also offer 17 flavours, which is remarkable. Usually, there are much fewer flavours available for vegans in comparison to regular products.

  • Strawberry flavour
  • Macadamia & Vanilla pods
  • Banana flavour
  • Cherry Bakewell flavour
  • Chocolate & Hazelnut
  • Chocolate (Cocoa) flavour
  • Coconut flavour
  • Coffee and Walnut
  • Chocolate Orange
  • Pistachio flavour
  • Almond flavour
  • Blackcurrant
  • Almond & Orange
  • Beetroot flavour
  • Beetroot & Chocolate
  • Curcumin (Turmeric) flavour

Strawberry flavour seems to be a popular choice for many people, as is chocolate flavour. Cherry bakewell flavour tastes great, and the natural taste of beetroot flavour is surprisingly popular.

Ways to Improve Purition Shakes

While most people agree that Purition shakes are excellent when taken normally, there are a number of ways to customise them. If you are using them to replace breakfast then you can turn your shake into a breakfast smoothie by adding fruit or vegetables.

You can also use Purition to make overnight oats, served with some fruit (half a banana works well) or frozen berries on the side. This can help to improve the taste and makes a really healthy breakfast.

Adding milk or a dairy free alternative can create a creamier taste, but will also increase calories.

Does Purition Work?

Unlike many supplements, meal replacement shakes should not be judged as to whether they “work” or not. This is because they are comparable to regular food. Do chia seeds work? does milk work? Food can be used for its health benefits, but it doesn’t work or not-work.

If you are taking Purition for specific goals, then it should help you to achieve them, so in that sense it does work, in the same way that eggs can help you to build muscle, or apples can help you to improve your nutrition.

Can Purition Help You Lose Weight?

Purition can help you to lose weight, particularly if you are swapping a high-calorie meal for a low 200 calorie shake. The high fibre and protein content can help to prevent hunger pangs, and this makes it easier to maintain a calorie deficit.

However, 200 calories is extremely low for a meal, and many people may find that it isn’t enough for them to thrive. Staying on very low-calorie diets can lead to a drop in activity levels, and this can make it harder to lose weight.

If your goal is weight loss, then there are other meal replacements such as Instant Knockout Complete. Our favourite weight loss meal replacement.

Purition Reviews from Customers

Purition scores very highly in its customer feedback. Many a Purition review focuses on the consistency. There are two camps, those who love Purition for its consistency, and those who hate it.

purition review

One Purition review on Amazon stated that they disliked the consistency, but compared to protein shakes it was an improvement.

Of course, all meal replacements tend to have a more balanced macronutrient ratio than protein shakes, and actually, Purition doesn’t have a great macro ratio due to the very low carb formula.

Anther positive Purition review mentioned how great it was that they used real food, and that it was excellent for reducing hunger pangs. There were also a number of reviews that praised its avoidance of added sugars, and the taste.

Is Purition Safe?

Yes, Purition is perfectly safe. Those of you with allergies may want to double-check the ingredients list, as it contains almonds, sesame seeds, and milk (Original only).

But there are no harmful ingredients, and provided you use Purition as part of a healthy diet, you should not expect to see any unwanted side effects.

Alternatives to Purition

There are a couple of excellent alternatives to Purition. We have already mentioned Instant Knockout Complete for weight loss.

You also have Rootana, which is great for weight management and is completely free from artificial sweeteners. In fact, Rootana doesn’t even use stevia but instead uses natural coconut sugars.

Rootana is the most obvious alternative to Purition, as it prioritises real food, avoids artificial additives, and is perfect for vegans due to its plant-based ingredients list.

Purition Meal Replacement Shakes: Final Thoughts

There is a lot to like about Purition, whether your goal is weight management, creating the perfect breakfast smoothie, or even if you are looking for a dairy free shake that can help aid weight loss.

The consistency may be an issue for some, as it is not always our favourite way to consume shakes. But there has been many a fabulous review of the taste and quality of Purition shakes.

If you are looking for a shake that can improve your health, and you have the budget to fit Purition into your diet, then it is worth giving it a go. However, shakes like Rootana may be a better fit.
